The Heinfels castle ruins on the northern side of the valley tower above Panzendorf near Sillian in East Tyrol and can be conquered on foot or by motor. Once you reach the castle hill, you can enjoy an incredible view over the valley and at the same time get goosebumps from dark legends about hidden treasures and spark-emitting animal guards.
The mighty complex impresses with round and square towers, an approx. 20 meter high keep - the center of the castle ruins, peppered with 38 loopholes, and kennels to reinforce the Heinfels castle ruins.
In the Middle Ages, the conspicuous storm poles were used for defense as they prevented the use of ladders to climb the castle.
For new fame and splendor, work is being done diligently on renovating the castle ruins, so that Heinfels in East Tyrol can impress again in 2020 with its “inner values” and its magnificent stucco décor knight's hall.

The legendary castle ruins of Heinfels in East Tyrol
The foundation of the castle, which is attributed to the Huns, is already shrouded in legend. Hence the name “Heunfels” or “Huonenfels”, which accompanied the complex from the 5th to the 16th century. Today it is assumed that Heinfels was founded by the Avars and was later owned by the Bavarian dukes.
Another legend tells that from the Salcherhaus - below the castle and today's Burg Heimfels inn - an underground passage leads to Heinfels Castle. The castle treasure supposedly lies there behind locked iron doors, which is guarded by two pitch-black dogs with sparkling eyes.
